Instead of focusing on interventions when we “need” them let’s focus on what we can do to lay the foundation for a healthy immune system. That kind of thinking and action what is going to serve you for the rest of of the year and beyond!
1. Prioritize sleep. Getting a good night rest consistently has a lot to do with our immune function. Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time daily. Sleep in a cool, dark, quiet room. Shut off screens (including phones) at least 20 minutes before bed.
2. Exercise! Promoting good circulation, raising white blood cells/antibodies, and decreasing your mental stress are just a few of the many immune-boosting effects of exercise.
3. Meditation and yoga are proven to lower our inflammation and stress. An inflamed and stressed body = a compromised immune system.
4. Fuel your body with 6-10 servings of vegetables and fruit daily. This will enhance your immune system even more than most supplements can. Sulforaphane for example, which is a compound found in broccoli in highest quantities, and also found in other cruciferous veggies like kale, cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in the body. Sulforaphane has antiviral activity in the body and is showing promise in fighting against our current crisis. I could do a whole series of posts on other nutrition interventions but will leave it here for now!
5. Supplements. There are lots more I could note, but this is meant to be a simple starter in addition to a diet rich in fruits and vegetables as outlined above! These help lay a foundation for good immune health and are beneficial in many other ways for the body too!
1. Most people could use a Vitamin D boost. Taking 5000 IU of vitamin D daily would be beneficial for most unless you already have optimal (not adequate) serum levels of D.
2. A good probiotic. Your immune system starts with a healthy gut!
3. Omega 3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing effects.
